Thin Pads Versus Thick Pads: Why Design Matters
Share
When we first began designing reusable pads, we experimented with 100% synthetic absorbent materials. To achieve the right level of absorbency, we needed to add multiple layers. More layers meant thicker pads, and thicker pads are not always the most comfortable choice.
At TCS-eco, our aim has always been simple: create pads that are exceptionally absorbent without feeling bulky. We combine carefully selected materials, specialist sewing techniques and thoughtfully designed shapes to give you the protection you need in a slimmer, more comfortable pad.
Thin Does Not Mean Less Absorbent
A thin pad is not automatically a low-absorbency pad. It comes down to the materials used and how they are put together.
We use highly absorbent core fabrics and combine them in ways that maximise performance without adding unnecessary bulk. Our stitching techniques also help increase absorbency while keeping the pad soft, flexible and comfortable to wear.
Every element matters, from the flow zone that directs fluid into the absorbent core and away from the edges, to our encased stitching, which helps create a secure and comfortable finish. This is what makes TCS-eco pads different from mass-produced reusable pads.
Our pads are designed using the same consistent core materials, so you know what to expect every time you order.
Our Top Fabrics and Pad Thickness
Each top fabric has its own purpose, feel and level of thickness.
Cotton Jersey is the thinnest option in our range. It is soft, flexible and ideal for anyone who wants a barely-there feel.
Minky is a close second. It is smooth, stain resistant and designed to stay soft wash after wash.
Bamboo Velour is our most absorbent top fabric. It is incredibly soft, offers rapid absorbency and is ideal for people who want maximum comfort and performance.
The right pad is not just about absorbency. Shape, length, top fabric and core design all work together to help you find the perfect fit for your body and flow.
Where to Start With Reusable Pads
If you are new to cloth pads, this is a great starter selection to cover lighter days, regular flow, heavier days and nights:
- Pack of 3 × 7” Liner pads in Hourglass or Slim
- Pack of 3 × 9” Regular pads in Hourglass
- Pack of 3 × 10” Heavy pads in Hourglass or Hourglass Wide
- Pack of 3 × 12” Night/Heavy pads in Hourglass or Hourglass Wide
This gives you a range of lengths and absorbencies, so you can work out what feels most comfortable for your body and flow.
TCS-eco Absorbency Guide
Our absorbency levels are designed around comfortable, usable absorbency, not simply maximum capacity before a pad fails.
- Liners: up to 20ml
- Regular: up to 50ml
- Heavy: up to 80ml
- Night: up to 100ml
- Confidence: up to 250ml, available in the custom section
Many disposable pads use synthetic stay-dry layers designed to draw moisture away from the surface. Reusable pads work differently. Instead of relying on a chemical stay-dry layer, our pads use highly absorbent fabrics that hold fluid within the core while remaining comfortable against the skin.
This is why our pads are designed to offer high absorbency without needing excessive thickness.
How Thick Are TCS-eco Pads?
Most of our commonly used pad absorbencies are around the thickness of a £1 coin.
Our Night pads are approximately the thickness of two £1 coins.
Our Confidence pads are around 1cm thick, which is approximately four £1 coins, but they offer up to 250ml absorbency for extremely heavy flow, bladder leaks or postpartum use.
Why Mass-Produced Pads Can Feel Bulkier
Many mass-produced reusable pads use microfiber, while more premium imported pads may use bamboo fleece. These materials often need more layers to reach higher absorbency levels.
More layers can mean a thicker, stiffer pad with less flexibility and comfort.
At TCS-eco, we focus on using the most effective materials in the right combination. This allows us to create pads that are thin, flexible, absorbent and designed to last for years.
Thin pads do not need to mean compromise. With the right materials, shape and construction, they can give you comfort, confidence and serious protection.
